Founded in 1956 by seven breastfeeding mothers, La Leche League International (LLLI) volunteers now reach over 300,000 mothers in more than 60 countries around the world. Every month, accredited volunteer counselors assist breastfeeding mothers through meetings and telephone support. LLLI is recognized by the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics as expert in the field. LLLI was also welcomed into consultative status with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 1981 and later joined with several other breastfeeding organizations in 1991 to form the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network to protect, support and promote breastfeeding.
