MAKING A MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE

Since our formation, we’ve assisted 20,000 mothers and babies, and trained over 100 peer counselors. In the year 2004 alone, we conducted 120 breastfeeding classes and counseled 2,113 families.

Initiation of Breastfeeding	Up from 15% in 1992 to 51.4% in 2004
6-Week Duration	Up from 14% in 1992 to 29.1% in 2004
6-Month Duration	Up from 9% in 1992 to 16.4% in 2004

 

SHARING OUR EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS

One of the cornerstones of our success has been the experience and empathy of our counselors. We have a culturally diverse counseling staff including Lactation Consultants certified by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and La Leche League Leaders with as much as 20 years of experience in breastfeeding instruction. All BELLAS counselors:

• Receive 40 hours of initial breastfeeding education and ongoing
  continuing education
  
• Have personal experience nursing their own children
  
• Attend local, regional and national conferences for the latest research
  related to breastfeeding
• Have access to research and the support of their mentors

BELLAS also has many bilingual Peer Counselors who are fluent in Spanish enabling us to reach out to the growing Latino community. For information in Spanish, click here.
